‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in England, an teenage playing for the youth squad against German opponents at Adams Park in September 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he took the field in England, against the English side following that, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, well, he scored again. When he returned to the city to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I got well angry,” the attacker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the brief trip to Loiu airport and a further journey to the UK, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words lights him up. This is proving a difficult season for Athletic, partially owing to the pressures of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he admits.
The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to live the best days of the club’s history.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the top level but every phase you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone in your position, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Particularly after the previous season which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
