Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection While McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn matches, but lock McCarthy is absent.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
Following playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team will play Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.
Frawley is the third number 10 selected with the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC league matches so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
