Synthetic graphics claiming to show Nicolás Maduro in custody after his apprehension by the US have garnered many millions of views across the internet.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours
Initial fake synthetic picture apparently showing him led off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. The graphic was unpublished by any official government accounts; it was instead posted on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was generated or edited with Google AI.
More synthetic images were disseminated in the subsequent period, purporting to present additional perspectives of the leader detained. Discernible watermarks on the graphics indicate they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis indicates the further pictures were also generated or edited generative models.
Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Persisted
The former US president shared the first real photo of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after this confirmation was published, AI-generated images persisted online but were modified to incorporate the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation indicate these altered fabrications were initially shared on TikTok by a digital art profile. Similarly, analysis says these further images were produced with AI tools.
